Jacque Legerney's Intermezzo for solo piano has just been published by Musik Fabrik. The work is dedicated to Leguerney's close friend Thérèse Cahen and was prepared by the noted Leguerney expert Mary Dibbern.

Musik Fabrik welcomes the French composer Philippe Legrandgérard.

After studies at the Paris Conservatory and at The University of Paris VIII, Philippe Legrandgérard entered the World of contemporary music where he met the composers who most influenced his work : H. DUTILLEUX; P. MEFANO; P. FOUILLAUD; J. BERNARD; E. ALLANDIA, among others. Among many notable concerts, his works have been performed at the Centre Pompidou (notably by members of the Ensemble 2e2m), at the Teatro Politecnico in Rome (by members of the Gruppo strumentale Nuove Forme Sonore) and on Radio France. .

Two works by Legrandgérard are now in our catalog: "Macadam Nocturne" for octet and "Black-blackboulé" for viola and piano.

Two new works by Carson Cooman

Musik Fabrik has just published two new works by Carson Cooman : Quidnet Shadows for flugelhorn and harp and A Robertsbridge Estampie for piano

Quidnet Shadows (2009) for flugelhorn and harp is dedicated to Chris Gekker. The title refers to Quidnet, a region of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. This work is one of a variety of pieces deeply connected to the landscape of Nantucket. Specifically, it is music inspired by beach shadows cast in evening light. A ritornello opens the piece and returns twice. In between these ritornelli are two mobiles, in which the music of the ritornello is developed in a freely, shadowing discourse between the two instruments. The work is available in our brass music catalog. and in our harp music catalog.

A Robertsbridge Estampie (2010) for piano was written for Jeffrey Grossman. It is a concert piano transcription of an anonymous estampie from the Robertsbridge Codex (c. 1360), the earliest surviving collection of music explicitly written for keyboard (likely a portative organ). The medieval two and three voice original is re-imagined in the context of the style and technique of the modern piano. The work is available in our piano music catalog.

New for saxophone and piano: Krakamp Fantasy on themes from Verdi's La Traviata

Krakamp's "Fantasy on Themes from Verdi's "La Traviata"

Emanuele Krakamp was born in Messina in 1813. He began studying
music with his father. In 1841 he was named first flute in the royal
orchestra of Naples and was also named flute professor of San Pietro
a Majella Conservatory in 1860. Krakamp performed concerts in Europe,
America, the Middle East and North Africa. The Fantasy Opus 248 based
on themes from Verdi's Opera "La Traviata" is part of a group of three
fantasies called "La triade verdiana", first published in 1865. Krakamp
died in Naples in 1883.

The version for saxophone remains close to the original version
for flute, with only a few register changes because of range issues.
Some passages in the piano part have been re-enforced harmonically
and the ending has been slightly changed, to create a more definitive
ending. .The work is available in our saxophone

new recording of Tailleferre's "Trois danses de la Nouvelle Cythère" by the Brillaner Duo

The Brillaner duo, composed of Shirley Brill, clarinet and Jonathan Aner, piano, have recorded Tailleferre's "Trois Danses de La Nouvelle Cythère" on their new CD Petite Pièce, which is available on their website. The recording is first-rate in every way and highly recommended!

Two new vocal works by Thérèse Brenet

Two new works for voice and piano (both of which also exist for voice and orchestra) by Thérèse Brenet have just been published by Musik Fabrik: Poème de Jade for Baritone Voice, Flute and Piano and Perles d'Ambre for female voice and piano.

Poème de Jade is a setting of seven Chinese poems which are taken from "La Flûte de Jade", a series of French translations of Chinese poems by Franz Toussaint. The voice part is intertwined with the flute part in a very expressive manner. The seven poems deal with images of love, of desire and ultimately with the role of the composer in Society. The work lasts for 17 minutes. The orchestral version is scored for 4 percussion, harp, harpsichord, piano and strings (44221)

Perles d'ambre is a wordless vocalize for female voice (low a to high b) and piano. The work is intended to be (in the words of the composer) "liberty, sensitivity and all of the expression of Music which breathes...in the infinite spirals of Love and Beaufy, above Space and Time.". The work lasts aproximately seven minutes. The orchestration is for 2 percussion, harp, harpischord and strings.

New from Jan Freidlin: works for two piano and piano with orchestra

We have just published a series of works by Jan Freidlin, which include Joyful Concertino for two pianos (useful for teaching as the first piano is less difficult than the second piano) as well as Contemplation for piano and string orchestra or two pianos. A performance of the work with orchestra is available on youtube :



Also the third movement of the Suite Tricolore Night Seine Blues has been arranged for solo instrument and piano, with many possible instruments (flute, saxophone, clarinet, violin, trumpet, etc). Here is a jazz performance of the work, with the composer at the piano :

Raj Bhimani to perform the music of Thérèse Brenet Sunday, April 19th in Paris

Pianist Raj Bhimani will perform the French première of Thérèse Brenet's "Trois Preludes" pour piano on Sunday, April 19 at 16h00 at the American church in Paris. The programme (which is listed below) will also feature works by Brahms, Roussel and Poulenc. The American church is located at 65, quai d’Orsay, 75007 Paris and admission is free (a collection is taken to help support the series).

Raj Bhimani is an active performer, teacher, and adjudicator. He has presented solo and chamber music recitals in the United States, France, Italy, Portugal, Canada, and India, and can be heard regularly in and around New York. Performances of his have been broadcast on Indian National Radio and Television, Portuguese National Radio, and also on WQXR and WHUS Radio in the United States. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pomona College in California, and a Master of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory in Maryland. He had the good fortune to study in Paris for three years with noted French pianist Nicole Henriot-Schweitzer, and in New York has had a long association with Seymour Bernstein. He also values the assistance he has received from Claude Frank and Andre Laplante. Mr. Bhimani teaches in the Music School of the 92nd Street Y in New York and also maintains large private teaching studios in Bronxville, New York, and in Manhattan. He has also taught at New York University and in the Music Preparatory Department of Concordia College, and gives lectures and workshops on piano pedagogy, the performance of French piano music, and other topics.

Thérèse Brenet's "Le Fascinateur with poetry by Jean-Pierre Luminet

Thérèse Brenet has written many works inspired by the Cosmos and Space. Her most recently published work is a trio with narrator which uses the poetry of astrophysicist Jean-Pierre Luminet. From the composer's notes:

Le Fascinateur is scored for narrator, celtic harp, piano and percussion.

The texts are taken from a poem by the astrophysicist Jean-Pierre Luminet. Nous nous étions plu, in Griphes, followed by Topiques, (Gérard Oberlé, Manoir de Pron, Nivernais, 1989).

The juxtaposition suggests in epigram a quotation from Gaston Bachelard, which could apply to the musical score with an equal pertinence, since the music is, for Thérèse Brenet, the echo of the Cosmos

“All of the words which are called to greatness by a poet are the keys to the universe, to the double universe of the cosmos and of the depths of the human soul.”

The work is available on the composer's page at our website. It will be recorded in a few months under the musical direction of Jean Thorel.

Musik Fabrik welcomes composer Gloria Coates

The newest addition to Musik Fabrik's roster is the American composer Gloria Coates, the woman composer who has written more symphonies than any other woman in history. Ms. Coates' First Symphony "Music for Open Strings" is considered one of the most important works in microtonal music and has written fifteen other symphonies, many of which have been recorded by major orchestras. She has also written nine string quartets, a great deal of chamber music, vocal music and for the theatre.

Her first work published by Musik Fabrik is her Elegy for flute and piano, and was part of our collective homage to Claude Lévi-Strauss on his 100th birthday. The composer gave the following program note for this work :

Elegy was written as a commission in 2002 in the wake of the tragedy of September 11th. Because the emotions were too close to me, I didn't feel like having this work performed. Thus I wrote a different piece for that commission and put Elegy away on a shelf.
It was forgotten completely until this fall when Elizabeth Weinzierl, the German flutist, who had originally commissioned the piece, asked to perform it with the pianist Eva Schieferstein in a concert in Munich's Performing Center Gasteig. Thus, the premier took place October 12, 2008.
A few days later, Paul Wehage asked for a composition in celebration of Claude Levi-Strauss' 100th. birthday. One remembers his great writing Tristes Tropiques which is a romantic elegy on the Amazon.
My own Elegy not only expressed my feelings about the injustice and destructive impulses in the 2001 terrorist attack, but could also include other negative forces in our civilization today such as the destruction of the Amazon. Thus, I have dedicated this work to the 100th. birthday of Claude Levi-Strauss and his untiring energy to elevate the spiritual and ecological thinking and actions in our threatened world.
